Barra Colorado is more than just a fishing spot, it’s a place full of history, a true landmark in Costa Rican sportfishing. This is where it all began, and my family has been part of that story for decades.
My father, Peter Gorinsky, moved to Costa Rica in the 1970s and quickly became a key figure in the development of fly fishing in the area. He was one of the first to guide anglers in search of giant tarpon in Barra Colorado.
Casa Mar, the first tarpon fishing lodge in Costa Rica, was the heart of it all. From the 1960s to the 1980s, it was a must-visit destination for world-famous anglers chasing trophy tarpon.
Now, there’s a movement to bring Barra Colorado back to life, and I’m excited to be part of it. This place still holds some of the best tarpon fishing in the world, and there’s no better time than now to experience it again.

The riverbanks also serve as a corridor for the elusive Tapir, while the canopy above comes alive with exotic birds, from vibrant toucans to elegant herons. The lagoons become a great alternative when the river mouth conditions turn more challenging, offering the chance to target other exciting species.
While the Silver King is our main star, the waters of Barra del Colorado offer incredible diversity for those who love variety. In the river mouth and lagoons, you’ll find Snook perfect for light tackle action, while the aggressive Guapote Tigre (Rainbow Bass) provides a fierce fight deep in the jungle rivers. For a thrilling surface bite, the Mojarra is always ready to smash poppers and topwater flies.
We understand the dynamics of this ecosystem: when the tarpon bite is hot, the lagoons usually aren’t, and vice versa. It’s a common trade-off in these wild waters, which is why we always plan our sessions accordingly to ensure you’re always where the action is.

The first peak season typically runs from March through mid-June, a time when weather conditions are drier and the water is generally calmer. This makes it easier for anglers of all levels to enjoy smooth fishing conditions. During this time, tarpons can be found closer to the surface, making them more accessible for fly fishing.
The second peak season occurs between September through mid-November During this period, tarpons are highly active and can be found in large schools near the river mouths and estuaries along the coast. Although some days might experience light rain, this season is perfect for anglers who enjoy a more challenging experience with exciting bites.
We recommend 12wt to 14wt rods with an extended fighting grip, paired with a 10wt-minimum reel with 200+ yards of backing. Sinking lines (450-550 grain) reach deep-holding fish; floating lines with shooting heads work when they’re active near the surface.
The gold standard is the EP-style fly in black/purple or black/red, tied on ultra-strong 4/0 hooks. For those who tie their own: Gamakatsu SL12s or Owner AKI hooks.

Since Barra del Colorado is a remote paradise with no road access, the journey is an adventure in itself. You have two main options:
Domestic Flight: A scenic 30-minute flight from San José directly to the Barra del Colorado airstrip.
Driving from Juan Santamaría Airport (SJO) to Puerto Lindo:The journey from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) to the lodge is a two-part adventure. First, a 4-hour drive (145 km) takes you through the scenic Route 32 to Puerto Lindo, the last point accessible by land. From there, we provide a private 45-minute boat transfer through the exotic jungle canals until you reach the docks of Rio Colorado Tarpon Lodge.
We focus exclusively on Full Day sessions, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a midday break. Because of the remote location and the nature of the tarpon migration, we strongly recommend a 3 to 4-day stay.
All our standard trips include a professional fishing boat, top-of-the-line gear (rods, reels, and tackle), and an expert local guide. However, for a truly seamless experience, we offer All-Inclusive Custom Packages. These packages cover everything from your transportation to your lodging and meals at Rio Colorado Tarpon Lodge. Yes. Catch and release is strictly practiced for all species we target.
Fish are handled carefully, kept in the water as much as possible, and released quickly to ensure their health and survival. This approach helps protect local fish populations and preserves the fishery for future anglers.
You don’t need to be an expert in this location, but having prior knowledge and some fishing experience is recommended. This will help you enjoy the experience more, as our trips include specific fishing techniques in tropical environments that may require casting precision and familiarity with the equipment. While our guide will be by your side to provide support and instructions, having a foundation in fishing is useful to maximize your chances of success and make the most of the day.
Absolutely! You’re welcome to bring your own gear. We also provide all the necessary equipment at no extra cost.
Our captains are not just passionate: they are certified professionals by the Costa Rica Fly Fishing Association (CRAFF). This certification guarantees they follow strict eco-friendly fishing practices, like keeping the fish wet and handling them respectfully.
Yes. A fishing license is required by Costa Rican law for fishing in both saltwater and rivers. You can apply for it online through SINAC by completing the application form. The license costs US$30.
